How to Clean Text and Remove Formatting Online
Text copied from websites, PDFs, or documents often includes unwanted formatting, extra line breaks, special characters, and hidden Unicode. Cleaning text is essential before pasting into databases, emails, or plain text fields. This guide shows you how to clean and normalize text online using fixie.tools with one-click removal of formatting, whitespace, and special characters.
Step 1: Open the Text Cleaner
Go to fixie.tools/text-clean in your browser. The tool works on all devices without requiring any signup or installation.
Step 2: Paste Text to Clean
Paste or type the text you want to clean into the input area. You can paste text from any source: Word documents, PDFs, websites, emails, or copied clipboard content. The tool accepts up to 1MB of text at once.
Step 3: Choose Cleaning Operations
Select which cleaning operations to apply: Remove extra whitespace (multiple spaces, tabs, empty lines), Strip HTML tags, Remove line breaks, Fix smart quotes (convert curly quotes to straight quotes), Remove special characters, Convert to lowercase/uppercase, or Trim leading/trailing spaces.
Step 4: Preview Cleaned Text
The cleaned text appears instantly in the output pane with a before/after comparison. You can see exactly what was removed or changed. The character count and word count update to show how much the cleaning affected your text.
Step 5: Copy or Download Clean Text
Click the copy button to copy cleaned text to your clipboard, or download as a plain text .txt file. The cleaned text is ready to paste into databases, forms, or any application requiring plain text input.
