How to Generate Meta Tags for SEO and Social Media
Meta tags control how your web pages appear in search results and when shared on social media. Properly formatted meta tags improve click-through rates from Google, create rich previews on Twitter and Facebook, and help search engines understand your content. This guide shows you how to generate SEO and social media meta tags using fixie.tools — completely free with templates for all major platforms.
Step 1: Open the Meta Tag Generator
Go to fixie.tools/meta-tags in your browser. The tool provides templates for all essential meta tags including SEO basics, Open Graph for Facebook, Twitter Cards, and additional tags for mobile and web apps.
Step 2: Enter Your Page Information
Fill in the basic information about your web page. Provide a page title (50-60 characters for optimal display in search results), meta description (150-160 characters describing what your page is about), and page URL (the canonical URL where the page lives). Add keywords if relevant to your SEO strategy, though modern search engines place less emphasis on keyword meta tags.
Step 3: Configure Open Graph Tags for Social Media
Complete the Open Graph section to control how your page appears when shared on Facebook, LinkedIn, and other social platforms. Upload or specify an image URL (recommended size: 1200x630 pixels), choose the content type (website, article, product, etc.), and add any additional properties like article author, publish date, or site name. The tool shows a preview of how your link will appear in social feeds.
Step 4: Set Up Twitter Card Meta Tags
Configure Twitter-specific meta tags to optimize how links appear in tweets. Choose between Summary Card (small image) or Summary Card with Large Image (prominent image), add your Twitter username for attribution, and set the card title and description (can differ from OpenGraph if you want Twitter-specific messaging). The preview shows exactly how your tweet card will look.
Step 5: Copy and Add to Your HTML
Once you've configured all meta tags, click Copy HTML to copy all the generated meta tags. Paste them into your page's <head> section, between the opening <head> and closing </head> tags. The tool generates clean, validated HTML ready to use. Test your meta tags using Facebook's Sharing Debugger and Twitter's Card Validator to ensure they display correctly.
